Rose Bowl Conflicts
I was only able to watch the second half of the Rose Bowl because I was working late, but it was a great game. The Evil Twin of Williams Jennings Bryan wrote before the game about how much he hates USC and likes Texas here:
I've seen Texas play live twice and although many of their fans are bizarre, the vast majority are really nice people. Why do I hate USC? I hate them because all of a sudden everyone is a USC fan. If you are a USC alum I have no problem with you. If you are not an alum, but have been a fan forever, even through the crap pre-Carroll years then I have no problem with you. However, if you decided in the last 2 years that you were a USC fanatic, I'm not buying it.
I have connections to both schools so I was slightly rooting for USC, but did not mind if UT won. The first football game I ever went to was a USC vs. Arizona State game in the late 80s at the Coliseum that USC lost. Then USC recruited me a good bit when I was in high school (for my SAT scores, not my athletic ability) and offered me a bigger scholarship than any other school did in absolute dollars. It was still out of my price range, a bit big for my taste, and I did not really want to live in LA so I went to school here in Texas instead when Trinity University offered me a smaller scholarship, but their base tuition was half that of USC so I could afford it without much debt. On the other hand my dad went to UT for grad school, I considered UT for grad school enough to send them my GRE scores and visit the campus, and I have visited the campus several other times as well. Although I have been to Texas Tech and Texas A & M games, I have yet to go to a UT game.
I suspect that I might fall into the category of a long time USC fan, but in the end I simply care much more about professional football than college football partly because professional football embraces its commercial crassness, while the NCAA still tries to pretend it is about education. Unfortunately the Cowboys blew it and I have not picked which teams I will be rooting for this year. I will at least be rooting against the Giants and the Redskins. I may root for Cincinatti because of the Icky shuffle and Seattle because they never win any professional chanpionships. Also I will have to miss many of the NFL playoff games this year because of work, which is something I have not done for years.

Pete is being modest. They were recruiting him for his excellence in Pol Pot Ball, a game he invented and dominated.

It was, as they say, an instant classic.
