Oresteia Part 2

I finished the Oresteia trilogy on Wednesday. It was good, but Agamemnon (the first play in the trilogy) seemed to be the best play out of the three and I also liked Sophocles Elektra more than Aeschylus’ Libation Bearers (the second play in the trilogy). The Eumenides (the third part of the trilogy) was a very interesting concept for a play and probably the best use of the Greek Chorus in all of the Greek plays I have read. The Chorus (in this case the Furies) was in many ways the protagonist in this play as Orestia just wanted to be left alone by them and Apollo and Athena only showed up because Orestia needed their help. The ultimate resolution of the play involved Athena giving the Furies a new job and by the end I had almost forgotten about Orestia.

I am still going though the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich on tape and am now about half way through. Hitler is in the middle of making his treaty with Stalin and is about to invade Poland. I have not learned much from this series recently, but the author seems very convinced the allies could have stopped Hitler earlier on several occasions if they had the initiative to really try.

For lighter reading I am trying out Artemis Fowl. It is kind of like Harry Potter if Harry did not go to school, had no magical powers of his own, and was evil.

It does have the classic deus ex machina, though. And ya gotta love the argument that Clytemnestra isn't related by blood to her son Orestes on the basis that Athena was born without a mother and so mothers aren't really necessary.
