Save Toby

Mickey Kaus writes that last night NBC did a serious story about Save Toby, a website whose owner is threatening to kill and eat a rabbit named Toby if he is not paid $50,000 by a certain date. Many suspect the site is a hoax, but it is interesting to see how seriously people take issues like this. This is just one rabbit, but the site owners gave it a name and posted cute pictures of it, thus personalizing it. For instance their recipe for Labin Braise starts off with

1 Toby cut in serving-sized pieces flour for dusting with salt and pepper

Countless rabbits are killed every day for food by people and wild animals, but NBC would probably never do a report about those rabbits getting eaten. Rabbits are also one of the rare animals that is acceptable to eat and to keep as a pet in America so I think that is part of what makes this website so disturbing to some people.
