Berger Going to Jail? Part 2
Sandy Berger has plead guilty to stealing and destroying classified documents. Fox News Reports:
acknowledging that it wasn't an honest mistake and that he intentionally took and destroyed copies of the classified documents from the National Archives (search) and cut them up with scissors
These documents had unique notes on them from Clinton administration officials and their handling of previous terrorist threats. We will now never know what they said because Berger has intentionally destroyed this unique historical evidence.
Unfortunately his punishment so far is way too light.
When this scandal first became news, a friend of mine who worked for a defense contractor and had a security clearance and access to classified defense documents asked me if I thought Berger was going to go to jail. I said no, but that he deserved to go to jail for several years and never have a security clearance again because if any low level person did what Berger did that would be their punishment. Instead Berger will pay a fine, be put on probation, and have his clearance temporarily revoked. Hopefully Berger career in government is over, but this punishment does not guarantee that.
Previous Berger post.
