Overriding the Heckler's Veto

Jim Geraghty at TKS has a good post about Republicans overriding the heckler's veto.

If you'll recall, there were quite a few loud, profane, obnoxious — "protests" is too generous a word, let's call it "hooliganism" — at both the Republican convention and the Inauguration. The Left turned a corner when it stopped protesting particular decisions like the Iraq War or economic policies and just started protesting... well, the existence of Republicans, basically. "I don't like what you're saying, at the convention of your party, and so I'm going to scream and yell and try to prevent you from being heard." Sorry, that thinking doesn't win me over.

Now keep in mind, I'm all for the right of free speech. But that means the speaker at the lectern ought to be heard, too.

If we stopped seeing lefty protesters screaming and yelling like cranky toddlers in the middle of officials' speeches, these steps by Bush event officials might look heavy-handed. But these days, with the obnoxious, no-holds-barred, my-right-to-protest-outweighs-your-right-to-speak tactics of the left, can anybody blame event organizers for being cautious?
