Rather Shameful
I find it hard to believe that anyone can still think that CBS did an adequate job vetting the documents before they aired them. The documents probably came from an anti-Bush conspiracy theory zealot name Bill Burkett. Either they came from him directly or came from the Kerry campaign, DNC, or another democrat after first coming through him. Powerline has more details here and here. There is no way that CBS would have aired similar documents defaming Kerry that had come from an anti-Kerry zealot with a history of mental problems like Burkett. The scary part is that this is probably not the first time CBS has done this, but is only the first time they have been caught so publicly.
Ace of Spades does a good job detailing the history of Burkett. CBS claimed that their source was 'unimpeachable.' Burkett has a history of making hysterical statements and invoking wild-eyed Moore style conspiracy theories about Bush. Either Burkett is not the source, CBS is lying, or CBS does not know what the term 'unimpeachable' means.
Oh, and Dan Rather should be fired.
