Pitt the Elder!
For those of you wondering how I chose the name for this blog, I was watching a Simpsons episode the other day called Homer at Bat I believe. Its the one where Homer joins the company softball team and is doing great until Burns decides to bring in a bunch of ringers like Roger Clemens and Ozzy Smith to win a bet. Each player (except Strawberry) has a strange fate that keeps them out of the big game. What has this to do with Pete the Elder? Here is the scene from Moe's bar:
Barney 'And I say, England's greatest Prime Minister was Lord Palmerston!'
Wade Boggs 'Pitt the Elder!'
Barney 'Lord Palmerston!'
Wade Boggs 'Pitt the Elder!'
Shoves Barney
Barney 'Okay, you asked for it, bud!'
Barney Punches out Wade Boggs
Moe 'Yeah, that's showing him, Barney! Pitt the Elder...'
Barney 'Lord Palmerston!'
Punches out Moe
You see Pitt the Elder and and Pete The Elder sound kind of alike and I thought it was a cool sounding name. Dangerous Dan at first thought it was a reference to Pliny the Elder, which I had thought of as well, but I doubt any cartoon baseball player has ever been punched out over a debate over either of the Pliny's accomplishments.
I considered Pete the Younger as well, since I do not think I am that old, but Pete the Elder sounder cooler to me and someone who is named Pete who comes after me can now be known as Pete the Younger.
